JUNE LISTINGS

Sat 1st: This Saturday we’re thrilled to host an evening of live jazz with North East based group, The Milne Glendinning Band. This long established group have graced our stage before and we’re thrilled to welcome them back. A powerful trio of talented musicians, Debra Milne on vocals, Steve Glendinning on guitar and Michael Clark on bass will be providing original contemporary music with smart lyrics & jazz infused melodic grooves. Entry will be completely free with a Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music starting at 8pm


Sun 2nd: 2pm – 6pm
We’re delighted to host, this Sunday afternoon, a one-off exclusive gig from The New Century Syncopated Six; a pint-sized version of the New Century Ragtime Orchestra, providers of hot jazz from the Charleston era. This six piece outfit with feature Dave Hignett (trumpet), Jim McBriarty & Gavin Lee (reeds), Keith Stephen (banjo) and Dave Kerr (tuba) who will treat audiences to a lively, authentic musical Sunday afternoon. This gig will be completely free to enter and enjoy and we’ll have a Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 2pm with the live music starting at 2:30pm

 

Sun 2nd: Prohibition is delighted to introduce a brand new duo to the North East circuit, ‘Jake & Blake’ in their debut performance. With Jake on guitar and Blake on bass this young pair will be bringing an evening of jazz and bossa nova to help wind up your week the Prohibition way. This gig will be completely free to enjoy and we’ll get our Jar on the Bar out for your generous cash donations. Doors open at 6pm, live music at 7pm.

Sun 2nd: (Upper Venue) Are you ready for an evening with the spirits? Introducing An Evening of Mediumship with local spiritual guide Elaine Somervile. Join Elaine as she connects with the spiritual realm in the cosy atmosphere of our upstairs venue. Bringing messages, guidance and evidence of loved ones. Whether you’re a believer or a skeptic, this event promises to be an intriguing experience. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to explore the mysteries of the unknown. There will be raffles on the night; bottles must stay corked/unopened until you leave the venue, reading prizes can be redeemed after the event. Wed 5th: (Upper Venue) It’s our weekly blues dance class, hosted by the fantastic Hoodoo Blues. Come alone or with a partner and learn from expert tutor Melissa Davy all about the art of blues dancing. Like the music itself, blues dancing is all about expression and takin’ it easy. All experience levels welcome and the class is drop in, drop out, so don’t ever worry if you’ve not been to one before, you will be well looked after. The class will begin at 7:30pm and run for approximately an hour. If it’s your first session then its free to take part and then thereafter it’s £7.50 per class (£5 for students/concessions)


Thu 6th:
This Thursday evening we’re thrilled to welcome to our stage The John Rowland Quartet. It’ll be a throwback to the glory days of the old Jazz Cafe and the hard bop scene. With John Rowland on tenor sax, Paul Grainger on double bass, Alan Law on keys and a mysterious drummer yet to be confirmed. Come on down and experience the live jazz that made these walls what they are. This gig will be completely free to enjoy and we’ll have the old Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music kicking off at 8pm

Fri 7th: We’ve got some live jazz in store for you all this Friday evening as we welcome back to our stage Eva Fox and The Jazz Guys. Performing some classics and standards through Eva’s soulful vocals accompanied by Alan Law on keys, Jude Murphy on double bass and Tim Johnston on drums. This gig will be completely free to enter and enjoy and we’ll get the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music starting at 8pm.

Fri 7th: (Upper Venue) We’re absolutely delighted to host an amazing night of drag cabaret as local superstar Phoebe LaReine presents Summer Camp! Join Phoebe, Dylan D. Dixon, Hyper Dermic, The Delta Quadrant and Bipty P as they take you on holiday (which if you’re anything like me will be the only one you get this year). Slap on the sun cream, grab that beach towel and get prepared to experience Butlins as if ran by Drag Queens. What could possibly go wrong?! Tickets are on a pay as you feel donation basis and can be found here. Doors on the night open at 7pm with the show kicking off at 7:30pm

Live this Saturday night, we’ve got some chilled jazz for you all performed by London based guitarist Tom Remon and local guitarist Laurence Harrison. Serving up some jazz standards and original works on dual guitars, these two talented musicians will provide the perfect backdrop to your Saturday night drinking here at Prohibition. Timeless Classics with Patrick Cromb ‘The Best Crooner in Toon!’ Join us for an unforgettable evening as Newcastle’s smoothest baritone, Patrick Cromb, brings the golden age of music to life. From the swing hits of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin to the heartfelt ballads of Matt Monro and Nat King Cole, Patrick will serenade you with tunes that have defined generations and stood the test of time. This gig will be completely free to enjoy and we’ll get our Jar on the Bar out for your generous cash donations. Doors open at 6pm, live music at 7pm.

Live this evening at Prohibition Cabaret Bar our resident jazz pianist Merlin Roxby will be taking his place at the keys and treating our guests to a jazzy, saloon style performance. Playing vintage piano versions of well known songs, Merlin will provide the perfect backdrop to anyone enjoying a drink in our establishment this evening. This live entertainment is completely free to enjoy and we’ll have the jar on the bar out for any cash donations, all of which go straight to Merlin. Doors open at 6pm, live performance from 8pm.

Thu 13th: (Upper Venue) Get ready for a night of mystery and intrigue as Phantoms returns to our venue; featuring a selection of fantastic new short stories from a range of local authors and storytellers. This edition we’re delighted to host seasoned storytelling duo Gail-Nina Anderson and Sean O’Brien and guest author Kris Johnson as they present their own work live. Tickets for this event cost just £5+bf and can be purchased here. The bar opens at 6pm with the event starting at 7pm


Fri 14th:
We’ve got a great deal of Prohibition style fun and entertainment in store for you this Friday night as we excitedly play host to Jenni Winter’s Sing Along Pian-Oke! Cabaret pianist Jenni Winter returns to the piano to tinkle the ivories while you, the people, will take to the stage and sing. In this monthly event, you’re invited to take your pick from our selection of songs (and even suggest a few for the next edition) grab a glass of Dutch courage and have fun on the Sapphire Stage with the mic in hand.  Entry is free and we’ll have our Jar on the Bar out for tips for our fantastic pianist. Doors open at 6pm with the fun kicking off at 8pm.


Sat 15th:
We have a wonderful, chilled out evening of live jazz in store for you this Saturday as we welcome back to our stage local jazz and blues legends Jude Murphy and Dan Stanley! Jude will speak to your soul with her phenomenal vocals and double bass work while Dan will dazzle you with his gorgeous guitar lines. A real treat for any fans of top musical talent. Entry will be free with a Jar on the Bar for any gratefully received donations. Doors open at 6pm with the live music from 8pm

Fronted by the smooth guitar skills of Rich Herdman and the fresh harmonica stylings of Ray Burns plus special guests rounding the outfit out. Fri 21st:
Roll up, roll up, it’s that time of the month once again – Burlesque night! Summer is here and the heat is rising so get yourself a place at this month’s Vaudeville Vault and feel your temperature go even higher. Hosted by the award winning Trixie Blue and starring her amazing troupe of local performers, The Sapphire Whiskers plus special guests, this month’s show is guaranteed to be a spicy, saucy, raunchy romp! Tickets for this show will cost just £3+bf and will go on sale at exactly 10:30am on Saturday 18th May – get on down to the House of Trixie Blue Facebook page for full information on ticket sales. Fri 21st: This Friday night we’re proud to host a special fundraiser event raising money for local LGBT+ charity Pride Action North. Presenting Slagatha Christie and the Polari Peril: A drag cabaret murder mystery. There’s been a murder! Well… there’s going to be. It’s the roaring 1920s and Duke Edjurmum Catslap has upset a lot of potentially dangerous people. The clues are all there, but will you be able to read them? It’s up to you to work out who the killer is through drag performances from our suspects and by deciphering clues written in queer code language Polari. Join us for a drag cabaret night like no other at the beautiful period themed Prohibition bar in Newcastle upon Tyne. Starring local drag icons: Dylan D Dixon, Frida Sapphic, Love Deluxe Erotica, Sweet Boy, The Velvet Snatch and Vick The Prick. Tickets cost just £10 and can be purchased here. Sat 22nd:
Come on down this Saturday night for some authentic rhythm ‘n’ rock, roots and blues music from local duo The Rocking Turner Brothers. Having performed all over the North East for years, including fantastic regular shows in our bar, these guys always put on a knee slappin’, foot stompin’ good time. Comprising of brothers Peter and Stuart Turner, expect some top shelf live music. This gig will be completely free to enter and we’ll get the famous Jar on the Bar out for your generous cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music kicking off at 8pm

Sat 22nd: (Upper Venue) Goodness me! It’s Club 30-80’s 8th Birthday this Saturday night! Club 30-80, a DJ led disco dance night geared towards adults who love going out for a boogie but would rather avoid the youth targeted club scene, have been putting on highly successful shows here at Prohibition for as long as we’ve existed so we’re absolutely thrilled to celebrate their birthday. Come on down this evening and revel with us! As ever your DJ host will be spinning tunes a-plenty on a request system so you can dance to the songs you want to hear. Tickets for this event are just £7+bf and can be purchased here. The event starts at 7pm.

This Sunday night we’re delighted to welcome back to our stage the phenomenal jazz trio Leeway. Comprised of three of the finest jazz musicians of the North East, Tim Johnston on drums, Jude Murphy on double bass and vocals and Alan Law on keys. Expect some silky smooth jazz standards with plenty of twists and turns but always right from the very top shelf. Thu 27th & Fri 28th: (Upper Venue) For two nights here at Prohibition come along and enjoy a fantastic theatrical production: Frognal & Fox – A Life in Song. Written by highly accomplished stage manager, actor and writer Fiona Ellis and directed and produced by Cinzia Hardy, the founder of the multi award winning Northumberland based performing arts company, November Club. Dive into a showbiz world full of glamour, optimism, rivalry and acceptance. Meet Margaret Frognal (Jane Holman) and Adele Fox (Zoe Lambert), two fading performers, as they showcase their singing and playing talents accompanied by their bemused and cynical pianist. Beneath the theatrical camaraderie lurks a tension, but what is it and will it be resolved?
Featuring favourite songs from stage and screen by songwriters such as Cole Porter, the Gershwins, Stephen Sondheim and Noel Coward, and lesser-known numbers, this raucous, cabaret-style show is not to be missed. Fri 28th:
This Friday night we are delighted to be joined by classically trained singer Carmen Silk, a phenomenal local vocalist who will be treating us to an evening of Classics With Carmen. Delivering an intimate mix of jazz, swing, blues and showtunes, Carmen will take inspiration from artists such as Liza Minelli, Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee and much more. This show is completely free to enjoy and we’ll have the old Jar on the Bar out for your generous cash donations. Live music from 8pm.


Sat 29th:
This Saturday night we’re thrilled to host an eccentric jazz, funk and soul collaboration between some of the region’s best jazz talents, tentatively named Papa G’s Troves. Featuring Papa G and some of the region’s best jazz musicians performing on saxophone, trumpet, double bass, keys, drums and of course some soulful vocals. Expect some authentic jazz classics with a gospelly twinge. This gig will be completely free to enjoy and we’ll have the Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music from 8pm


Sun 30th:
Are ya’ ready for this! This Sunday come on down for the premiere edition of The Jazz Jam Sandwich! Hosted by Rivkala and Mollie Nature, the jam sandwich will hit your ears and your souls on the last Sunday of every month here at Prohibition. It’s all about the freedom music brings us, whether you’re playing it or embracing it. Musicians are welcome, audience members are encouraged and all are loved so come along, grab a drink and take it in. There’s no charge for this baby and no reserved spots. Doors open at 6pm and the jam spreads from 7pm.

Thu 4th: (Venue) Roll up to the hustings, folks, it’s time for an evening of politics… in drag! Outstanding local drag troupe and regular performers here at Prohibition Drag Castle present Tories! The Drag Jukebox Musical. Join us for a riotous evening of political parody as we present Tories!: The All-Drag Satirical Musical. From Cameron to Sunak, prepare for an uproarious journey through the corridors of power. It’s 2024 and the Tory Prime Ministers of past and present are reflecting on their time in power whilst they’ve still… well… almost got it. Their plan is simple: try to persuade all-mighty Margaret Thatcher who has been the baddest one of them all; whilst doing it in platforms and stilettos. Join Drag Castle on election night and witness the high-camp fusion of effervescent drag performances and biting satire, as our queens and kings take on the roles of larger-than-life Tory figures. Expect salacious scandals and side-splitting comedy as we skewer the establishment with sass and style. Tickets for this show cost just £10+bf and can be purchased here. Fri 5th:
Presenting, this Friday evening, all-women cabaret trio Under the Wellie. A group that promises chansons and smoky jazz numbers fronted by their passionate and gifted singer, Magda! Under the Wellie will provide the perfect backdrop to your Friday evening, creating an intimate atmosphere for audiences. This gig will be completely free to enter and enjoy and we’ll get our Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 6pm with the live music from 8pm.

Join us this Saturday night for some retro vaudeville jazz with some funky arrangements and associated chaos with local outfit Redwell. Made up of a bevvy of local jazz talent that includes Rich Herdman (guitar), Ray Johnson (Trumpet) and Jude Murphy (Double Bass and vocals). Expect some top quality jazz from top quality performers. This will be a free gig and we’ll have the famous Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music from 8pm


Sun 7th:
Each month on the first Sunday of the month Prohibition Cabaret Bar brings you The Classic Cinema Club. Come on down and enjoy one of the big hits of the silver screen for free in our sophisticated screening room (the main bar with a projector setup). Showing this month: Double Idemnity: The 1944 hit starring Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwick. Entry is free and we’ll have cinema snacks on sale. Doors open at 2pm with the film showing from 3pm.

An old friend of Prohibition Cabaret Bar, Anth always provides a top shelf performance of finger picking guitar music in the genres of Swing, Western Swing, Gypsy Jazz and Hawaiian/50s Surf Music, Rock and Roll and Rockin’ 50s Instrumentals. Anth’s roots lie in the golden era of the American music scene, and audiences are treated not just to the performance, but to musical history as well. Entry will be completely free with a Jar on the Bar for donations. Doors open at 6pm, sets from 8pm

Thu 18th: (Venue)
Tonight at Prohibition Cabaret Bar! Our upstairs venue is playing host to the monthly networking event Together I’m Possible. Each month the team at Together arrange for two guest speakers to come along and share their stories, past experiences and unique outlooks on life allowing audience members to see things from a new perspective and learn something – be it a new positive attitude, an answer to something specific they’ve been looking for or simply how to be a better human. Tickets are sold on a “pay as you feel” donation basis. The doors to the bar open at 6pm and upstairs is open from 6.30pm. The first speaker is on from 7pm.

Roll up, roll up! It’s Burlesque night here at Prohibition, presented by the award winning House of Trixie Blue. This month we have in store for you all the more serious, classier show, The Burlesque Revue, where an incredibly talented and glamorous artist from the wonderful world of Burlesque comes along and teats us to a special guest performance. Tickets are just £3+bf and will be available to purchase from 10:30am on Saturday 22nd June. Follow the House of Trixie Blue Facebook page (linked above) to find ticket purchasing options. Fri 19th: (Venue) Hoodoo Blues presents their monthly open-to-all-experience-levels blues dance class and social. Hosted by some highly experienced dancing tutors, the Hoodoo Blues dance class aims to open up the world of blues dancing to any and all while sticking to the core themes of blues dancing – laid back, enjoyable, social and emotive. The class itself runs from 7:30pm – 8:30pm and is £10 to be a part of. From the end of the class at half past 8 the evening transitions smoothly into a dance social to put what you’ve learned into practice and to enjoy some Friday night blues music and dancing in a comfortable space. If you’re just in for the dancing social and not the class then it’s only £5 to enter. Runs until midnight.


Sat 20th:
Presenting The Northern Railroad Collective, a North East Americana, bluegrass and folk outfit. Inspired by the old timey music of the Appalachian and Americana setting, this five piece have performed at festivals and venues all across Tyneside and Northumberland and we’re thrilled to have them here at Prohibition for the first time – their music and our bar will go together like a little house on a prairie. This gig will be completely free and we’ll have the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 6pm with the live music starting from 8pm.


Sun 21st:
Attention, ladies and gentlemen! It’s the return of the phenomenal Showtunes and Wine! Hosted by the endlessly charismatic and musically gifted Carmen Silk, who will, as always, delight us with her belting vocals and wonderful stage presence. So come on down, grab yourself a glass of vino (or something else if wine isn’t your thing) and get ready to be entertained. Tickets are £5+bf and can be bought right here. Doors on the day will open at 5pm. Please Note this event requires a ticket to enter so for the duration of the show the main bar will not be open to the public, we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.


Wed 24th, Thu 25th and Fri 26th:
For the second year running we’re incredibly excited to be one of the host venues for The Newcastle Fringe Festival. The festival is back this summer with the very best of UK touring performing arts. From comedy to cabaret, theatre to family, music and more there is something for everyone in this vibrant and eclectic programme. Taking place over two weeks and in five venues, the festival comes to Prohibition on Wednesday 24th, Thursday 25th and Friday 26th. Please note for accessibility reasons the fringe festival will be taking place on our ground floor bar, so we’ll be using the upstairs venue as the “free entry, open to the public” space.

Wed 24th: (Venue) It’s our Weekly Pub Quiz! And for one night only… it’s upstairs!! Join our quizmaster, Danny ‘Eyeballs’ for four rounds of brain exercise. Come top of the pile and win actual cash money! Fall just short and come in second to win a boozy treat, or failing all that, come rock bottom to earn delicious biscuits for the whole team. £1 entry per person, teams of up to 6 people, quiz starts at 8:30pm


Thu 25th: (Venue)
Live this evening at Prohibition Cabaret Bar our resident jazz pianist Merlin Roxby will be taking his place at the keys and treating our guests to a jazzy, saloon style performance. Playing vintage piano versions of well known songs, Merlin will provide the perfect backdrop to anyone enjoying a drink in our establishment this evening. This live entertainment is completely free to enjoy and we’ll have the jar on the bar out for any cash donations, all of which go straight to Merlin. Doors open at 6pm, live performance from 8pm.


Fri 26th: (Venue)
This Friday evening we’ve got some proper authentic rockabilly, roots and blues music from fantastic guitarist and vocalist Stuart Turner. Stuart takes inspiration from such artists as Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, Joni Mitchell, George Benson and many others and is a regular performer here at Prohibition, always treating our guests to a foot tapping, knee slapping good time. This gig will be completely free and we’ll have the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors will open at 6pm with the live music from 8pm


Sat 27th:
Live this Saturday night we’re delighted to present The Mississippi Dreamboats. This well established outfit, frequenters of jazz festivals and clubs across the UK, are experts at hot club and New Orleans jazz. Made up of Gwyn Lewis (cornet), Liz Bacon (clarinet), Jim Blenkin (trombone), Sarah Thatcher (banjo and tenor guitar), Mike Kennedy (bass) and Paul Bacon (drums). This gig will be completely free to enjoy and we’ll have the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 6pm with the live music playing from 8pm.


Sun 28th:
Are ya’ ready for this! This Sunday come on down for the latest edition of The Jazz Jam Sandwich! Hosted by Rivkala and Mollie Nature, the jam sandwich will hit your ears and your souls on the last Sunday of every month here at Prohibition. It’s all about the freedom music brings us, whether you’re playing it or embracing it. Musicians are welcome, audience members are encouraged and all are loved so come along, grab a drink and take it in. There’s no charge for this baby and no reserved spots. Doors open at 6pm and the jam spreads from 7pm.
