Like the music itself, blues dancing is all about expression and takin’ it easy. All experience levels welcome and the class is drop in, drop out, so don’t ever worry if you’ve not been to one before, you will be well looked after. The class will begin at 7:30pm and run for approximately an hour. If it’s your first session then its free to take part and then thereafter it’s £7.50 per class (£5 for students/concessions)
Thu 3rd: Live this evening at Prohibition Cabaret Bar our resident jazz pianist Merlin Roxby will be taking his place at the keys and treating our guests to a jazzy, saloon style performance. Playing vintage piano versions of well known songs, Merlin will provide the perfect backdrop to anyone enjoying a drink in our establishment this evening. This live entertainment is completely free to enjoy and we’ll have the jar on the bar out for any cash donations, all of which go straight to Merlin. Doors open at 6pm, live performance from 8pm.
Fri 4th: This Friday night we’ve got a particular treat for the most loyal visitors to this particular site – a proper throwback to the glory days of the old Jazz Cafe as a troupe of local jazz music legends and frequent performers back in Keith’s days take to the stage. Tenor saxophonist John Rowland leads double bassist Paul Grainger, pianist Alan Law and a yet to be confirmed drummer. It’ll be jazz classics done right and best of all it’s completely free to enjoy. Of course, we’ll have the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 6pm, live music from 8pm
Fri 4th: (Venue) Get ready for a night of celebration in the form of a phenomenal drag cabaret as we honour Phoebe LaReine and Vick The Prick with Vick & Phoebe’s Birthday Bash! That’s right, your favourite drag brother and sister are celebrating, and they want you along for the ride. They shall, of course, be joined by some very special guests, so get dressed up and be ready to have a good time – the entertainment will be provided for you! Tickets for this special event are on a donation basis and can be purchased here. Doors on the night open at 7pm with the show starting at 8pm
Sat 5th: Come on down this Saturday for an evening of live jazz with North East based group, The Milne Glendinning Band. This long established group have graced our stage before and we’re thrilled to welcome them back. A powerful trio of talented musicians, Debra Milne on vocals, Steve Glendinning on guitar and Michael Clark on bass will be providing original contemporary music with smart lyrics & jazz infused melodic grooves. Entry will be completely free with a Jar on the Bar for your generous cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music from 8pm
Sun 6th: 3pm-6pm Award winning burlesque queen Trixie Blue presents Dr Sketchy’s Anti Art School! Come one, come all for an afternoon of drawing, drinking and live entertainment from some of House of Trixie Blue’s student performers & performers based in the North East. But what is Dr Sketchy’s? Dr Sketchy’s Anti-Art School is the world’s premier alt. drawing movement. Artists draw glamorous underground performers in an atmosphere of boozy conviviality. Founded in 2005 in a dive bar in Brooklyn Dr Sketchy’s has now spread to over 100 cities around the world. Tickets for the event are £6+bf and are available here. Doors open at 2:30pm, event starts at 3pm and goes on until 6pm. Please bring your own paper and pencils – limited resources available at the venue. Please note for the duration of the event the main bar is closed to those without tickets – open to the public from 6pm.
Sun 6th: This Sunday evening we’re delighted to welcome back to our stage, local acoustic covers duo Luke and Lizzie. Having spent some time busking around the North East and performing in various venues around South Shields, the duo are taking their music to the city centre including a gig in our bar. Performing hits from the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Amy Winehouse, White Stripes, Chris Isaac and more the duo will provide a fantastic, chilled out evening of soulful live music. This gig will be completely free to enjoy and we’ll have a Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music starting at 7pm

Thu 10th: Come on down this Thursday evening to enjoy Newcastle-Upon-Tyne based jazz ensemble Side Café Orkestar. Playing Klezmer, Hot Club, Balkan and other eclectic melodies and songs on accordion, clarinet, flute, mandolin, guitar, fiddle, cello, trombone, bass and percussion (so pretty much everything). This tight outfit provide the perfect live music to sit back and enjoy or get up and dance to. Entry for this gig is free and we’ll have our Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Thu 10th: (Venue) Presenting a special event this Thursday evening as local folk and traditional music duo Will Finn and Rosie Calvert celebrate the launch of their second album. An award winning husband and wife duo, Rosie and Will perform traditional and contemporary folk music with variety and flair; intricate harmonies, the rousing instrumentation of piano, steel pan and ukulele and joyful, warm stage presence. They’re taking their album launch party on tour, including a stop here at Prohibition so if you want to be a part of the celebration, tickets cost just £10+bf and can be purchased here. Fri 11th: We’ve got a great deal of Prohibition style fun and entertainment in store for you this Friday night as we excitedly play host to Jenni Winter’s Sing Along Pian-Oke! Cabaret pianist Jenni Winter returns to the piano to tinkle the ivories while you, the people, will take to the stage and sing. In this monthly event, you’re invited to take your pick from our selection of songs (and even suggest a few for the next edition) grab a glass of Dutch courage and have fun on the Sapphire Stage with the mic in hand. Of course, it’s October, so expect the song list to suitably reflect the spooky season. Entry is free and we’ll have our Jar on the Bar out for tips for our fantastic pianist. Doors open at 6pm with the fun kicking off at 8pm.
Sat 12th: This Saturday evening we’ve got some proper authentic rockabilly, roots and blues music from fantastic guitarist and vocalist Stuart Turner. Stuart takes inspiration from such artists as Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, Joni Mitchell, George Benson and many others and is a regular performer here at Prohibition, always treating our guests to a foot tapping, knee slapping good time. This gig will be completely free and we’ll have the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors will open at 6pm with the live music from 8pm
Sat 12th: (Venue) Exciting times, ladies, gentlemen and beyond, as we welcome the latest edition of The Club 30-80 DJ led clubnight – an evening designed for those of you who love to go out dancing and having fun but aren’t interested in the youth oriented club scene. Dust of the boogie shoes, because your DJ has got tunes a-plenty and will be spinning them all evening, so get your requests in and dance to the songs you want to hear! Sun 13th: (Venue) 4pm-6pm This Sunday afternoon we’re absolutely delighted to team up once again with Northumberland Theatre Company to bring you an absorbing matinee performance: Step into the intriguing world of Sherlock Holmes as NTC Touring Theatre Company brings to life “Sherlock Holmes and the Sting of the Scorpion”, an original mystery by award-winning writer Stewart Howson based on the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. With music by Lucy Desbrow and directed by Alice Byrne and Louis Roberts, this production promises a clever blend of suspense and deduction through the art of physical theatre. Tickets for this exclusive performance cost just £12.50 and can be purchased here. Doors on the day open at 3pm with the performance starting at 4pm
Sun 13th: This Sunday evening we’re delighted to present a trio of live jazz performances from some incredible local musicians. Cath Stephens and Paul Grainger will be combining double bass and vocals to weave a stripped back, unique tapestry of jazz, folk and original material telling stories through a feminist lens. Caroline Mary sings songs of animals, alcohol and agnosticism. Accompanied by guitar, her songs are not genre-specific, but hint at folk, country and pop. Caroline Mary’s voice and words will move and amuse you in equal measure. Eleanor Adams, having been trained in a church choir since the age of 9, first picked up a guitar when she fell in love with the work of Joni Mitchell. With a sound that draws comparison to The Cranberries and Joni Mitchell herself, Eleanor combines guitar and vocals to provide a truly sentiment expressing experience. This evening of phenomenal live music will be completely free to enjoy and we’ll put out the Jar on the Bar for any cash you wish to generously donate to the artists. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music kicking off at 7pm
Wed 16th: 4:30pm – 6pm Introducing a new musical venture here at Prohibition. Come and join Cath Stephens and the Prohibition team for a cosy session of music-making. This collaborative group will focus largely on vocal improvisation as a method for composition. The intention is to create a supportive space for improvisers, songwriters, musicians and poets to share their work, create new music together and to build collaborative partnerships and community. There will be a run of sessions to gauge interest and gather feedback. Sessions will run initially on a donation basis to help cover venue costs. Though there is a focus on vocal improvisation, please do feel free to bring your instruments. Refreshments will be available to buy in the venue, which is fully accessible.

Thu 17th: (Venue) Prohibition Cabaret Bar is thrilled to present a musical comedy odyssey, The Adventures of Tawny Owl. Combining rap, music and stand-up this is a one man show you won’t want to miss out on. Having debuted the show at the Brighton Fringe festival, Tawny Owl is taking to the road and going on tour, including a stop here in our humble bar. Described as Burnham meets Boosh, The Tawny Owl draws you into a surreal world where you will go on a fantastical journey blending fact and fiction in a high energy hour of comedy. Fri 18th: Roll up, roll up! It’s time for our monthly Burlesque night! Presented and hosted by the award winning Trixie Blue this night is always a highlight of our monthly calendar, never failing to entice, excite and enrapture the eager audience. This month it’s the turn of The Vaudeville Vault, a super celebration of Trixie’s core troupe, The Sapphire Whiskers, as well as guest performers from The House of Trixie Blue. What’s more, it’s October, and that means the performances will take on a seductively spooky vibe – you know you’re gonna love it. Fri 18th: (Venue) This Friday we’re delighted to bring you our monthly blues dance class and social with Hoodoo Blues. This is an open to all experience levels blues dancing class with a highly accomplished teacher. As with blues dancing itself the class is all about taking it easy, enjoying and expressing yourself and friendly socialising. After the class has finished the evening will transition smoothly into a blues dancing social event to put into practice what you’ve learnt. Doors open at 7pm with the class running from 7:30 to 8:30 and then the night continues until 12 midnight. Entry is £10 on the door for the class and the social or £5 for just the social.
Sat 19th: This Saturday night we’re delighted to welcome back to our stage blues musician Howlin’ Mat; every inch the blues man and one of the hardest working solo acts around both in the UK and abroad with gigs in Norway, Morocco, Germany, Holland, Belgium and Poland. He is a nationally acclaimed slide guitarist and cites Elmore James, R.L. Burnside and Mississippi Fred McDowell amongst his major influences. No Howlin‘ Mat show would be complete without his trademark cigar box guitar. Howlin‘ Mat is also a skilled story teller intertwining tales of life on the road with his music to create an intimate and unique experience for each audience. This gig will be completely free and we’ll get the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 6pm, show from 8pm.
Sun 20th: Attention, ladies and gentlemen! It’s the return of the phenomenal Showtunes and Wine! Hosted by the endlessly charismatic and musically gifted Carmen Silk, who will, as always, delight us with her belting vocals and wonderful stage presence. So come on down, grab yourself a glass of vino (or something else if wine isn’t your thing) and get ready to be entertained. Tickets are £5+bf and can be bought right here. Thu 24th: (Venue) Tonight at Prohibition Cabaret Bar! Our upstairs venue is playing host to the monthly networking event Together I’m Possible. Each month the team at Together arrange for two guest speakers to come along and share their stories, past experiences and unique outlooks on life allowing audience members to see things from a new perspective and learn something – be it a new positive attitude, an answer to something specific they’ve been looking for or simply how to be a better human. Tickets are sold on a “pay as you feel” donation basis, suggested donation £5, and can be found following their Facebook page, linked above. The doors to the bar open at 6pm and upstairs is open from 6.30pm. The first speaker is on from 7pm.

Sun 27th: Are ya’ ready for this! This Sunday come on down for the latest edition of The Jazz Jam Sandwich! Hosted by Rivkala, Mollie Nature and Liam Oliver, the jam sandwich will hit your ears and your souls on the last Sunday of every month here at Prohibition. It’s all about the freedom music brings us, whether you’re playing it or embracing it. Musicians are welcome, audience members are encouraged and all are loved so come along, grab a drink and take it in. There’s no charge for this baby and no reserved spots. Doors open at 6pm and the jam spreads from 7pm.

Thu 31st: (Venue) BOO! Just kidding, hope I didn’t scare ya – but it is Halloween, so I think it’s time for a fittingly spooky, yet sensational show here at Prohibition. Presenting Five Nights at Wetherspoons hosted by phenomenal local drag artist Reese Wetherspoon. Reese and her horde of unhinged guest performers invite you to celebrate Halloween with them in style as they treat you to an insane cabaret, singing, dancing, games, twists, tricks and if you’re good maybe some treats too. Guest stars include Bipty P, Dylan D Dixon, Sweet Boy and Vick the Prick. Tickets for this extravaganza cost £6.66 (obviously) and can be found here along with full information. Fri 1st: It’s All Hallows Day so we’re celebrating by bringing you an evening of spooky tales and mysterious fables as local historian and storyteller David Silk will be treating us to an evening of local ghost stories and legends. David will be spinning yarns of creatures and the follies of mortal men so collect a stiff drink from the bar to stop your hands from shaking and take your seat to stop yourself from fainting as your mind is torn asunder with fantastic terror. You can come on in and enjoy the frightfest completely free of charge and we’ll even have the famous old Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the spooky stories starting at 8pm. Please Note due to the nature of the event this evening the atmosphere in the bar will be a quieter, more subdued affair for the duration of the performance.

Get tickled pink on Pink Lane with a night of daftness and silliness with some mighty fine local comedians. Host Si Beckwith introduces Cal Halbert, Fran Best, Harvey Dench, Laurie Brewster and Shay Raper. Hailing from Edinburgh, this authentic musical group have performed all across the North East and Scotland and even at shows in London as well as some excellent performances here in our humble bar. The quartet return to treat audience members to some moving and soothing vocals, fiddle, guitar, double bass and drums in the form of their own written works as well as some interesting twists on classic tunes. This DJ led disco night is all about dancing to the music of the likes of Skid Row, Cinderella, Ratt, LA Guns, Crue, Poison, Warrant, Dokken, Faster Pussycat and much much more. An old friend of Prohibition Cabaret Bar, Anth always provides a top shelf performance of finger picking guitar music in the genres of Swing, Western Swing, Gypsy Jazz and Hawaiian/50s Surf Music, Rock and Roll and Rockin’ 50s Instrumentals. Anth’s roots lie in the golden era of the American music scene, and audiences are treated not just to the performance, but to musical history as well. But you’re in top hands in the forms of Jude Murphy on double bass and vocals, Sid White on drums and Steve Chambers on the headlining organ. This evening of live jazz will be completely free to enjoy and you can show your support in the form of cash donations into the Jar on the Bar. Doors open at 6pm with the live music from 7pm.

Wed 13th: (Venue) It’s our weekly blues dance class, hosted by the fantastic Hoodoo Blues. Come alone or with a partner and learn from expert tutor Melissa Davy all about the art of blues dancing. Like the music itself, blues dancing is all about expression and takin’ it easy. All experience levels welcome and the class is drop in, drop out, so don’t ever worry if you’ve not been to one before, you will be well looked after. The class will begin at 7:30pm and run for approximately an hour. If it’s your first session then its free to take part and then thereafter it’s £7.50 per class (£5 for students/concessions)
Thu 14th: We’ve got an exclusive gig lined up for you this Thursday evening as London based guitarist and regular performer here Tom Remon is joined by much acclaimed US guitarist John Stowell for an evening of smooth jazz on dual guitars. John is a unique jazz guitarist influenced as much by pianists and horn players as much as he is by guitarists. He has taught his skills internationally for over 40 years and loves nothing more than to bring the art to the people. You can come on down and enjoy this one-off gig for free, and we’ll have our Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors at 6pm with the live performance from 8pm
Fri 15th: Roll up, roll up! It’s Burlesque night here at Prohibition, presented by the award winning Trixie Blue. This month we have in store for you all the more serious, classier show, The Burlesque Revue, where an incredibly talented and glamorous artist from the wonderful world of Burlesque comes along and treats us to a special guest performance. Tickets are just £3+bf and will go on sale at exactly 10:30am on Saturday 19th October; they can be found through the House of Trixie Blue Facebook page (linked above). On the night entry is permitted only to those with tickets. Doors open at 7pm
Fri 15th: (Venue) This Friday we’re delighted to bring you our monthly blues dance class and social with Hoodoo Blues. This is an open to all experience levels blues dancing class with a highly accomplished teacher. As with blues dancing itself the class is all about taking it easy, enjoying and expressing yourself and friendly socialising. After the class has finished the evening will transition smoothly into a blues dancing social event to put into practice what you’ve learnt. Doors open at 7pm with the class running from 7:30 to 8:30 and then the night continues until 12 midnight. Entry is £10 on the door for the class and the social or £5 for just the social.
Sat 16th: This Saturday night we’re thrilled to host an eccentric jazz, funk and soul collaboration between some of the region’s best jazz talents, tentatively named Papa G’s Troves. Featuring Papa G and some of the region’s best jazz musicians performing on saxophone, trumpet, double bass, keys, drums and of course some soulful vocals. Expect some authentic jazz classics with a gospelly twinge. This gig will be completely free to enjoy and we’ll have the Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music from 8pm
Sun 17th: We’ve got some live jazz standards, popular songs and showtunes from the Great American Songbook brought to us by local musicians Eva Fox & The Jazz Guys. Eva performs regularly with jazz legends Alan Law, Paul Grainger and Tim Johnston, so we’re bound to be treated to a top quality performance. This gig will be completely free to enjoy and we’ll have the Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 6pm, live music from 7pm
Sun 17th: (Venue) An exclusive, very special event this Sunday evening as widely acclaimed history podcast Who Did What Now is out on tour, including a stop off here at Prohibition with a live recording. The history podcast that’s not your history class, Who Did What Now is hosted by everyone’s favourite history harlot Katie Charlwood. Experience history like never before as Katie brings a fresh, witty and occasionally smutty take on what is commonly referred to as “the past”. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and who knows… you may even learn something. Tickets for this special event cost just £12+bf and can be purchased here. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the recording running from 8pm-10pm.

Thu 21st: (Venue) Tonight at Prohibition Cabaret Bar! Our upstairs venue is playing host to the monthly networking event Together I’m Possible. Each month the team at Together arrange for two guest speakers to come along and share their stories, past experiences and unique outlooks on life allowing audience members to see things from a new perspective and learn something – be it a new positive attitude, an answer to something specific they’ve been looking for or simply how to be a better human. Tickets are sold on a “pay as you feel” donation basis, suggested donation £5, and can be found following their Facebook page, linked above. The doors to the bar open at 6pm and upstairs is open from 6.30pm. The first speaker is on from 7pm.
Fri 22nd: This Friday night we are delighted to be joined by classically trained singer Carmen Silk, a phenomenal local vocalist who will be treating us to an evening of Classics With Carmen. Delivering an intimate mix of jazz, swing, blues and showtunes, Carmen will take inspiration from artists such as Liza Minelli, Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee and much more. This show is completely free to enjoy and we’ll have the old Jar on the Bar out for your generous cash donations. Live music from 8pm.
Sat 23rd: Well it’s nearly December so I think it’s time to get started on the festive season with a phenomenal live performance from Canadian born singer and songwriter Robyn Taylor. This Saturday evening, Robyn will take to the stage to treat us to an evening of classic Christmas hits from the golden era of jazz, swing and showtunes. So come on down for this soul warming evening and start getting into the seasonal spirit. This gig will be completely free and we’ll have the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors will open at 6pm with the live performance from 8pm
Sun 24th: Are ya’ ready for this! This Sunday come on down for the latest edition of The Jazz Jam Sandwich! Hosted by Rivkala, Mollie Nature and Liam Oliver, the jam sandwich will hit your ears and your souls on the last Sunday of every month here at Prohibition. It’s all about the freedom music brings us, whether you’re playing it or embracing it. Musicians are welcome, audience members are encouraged and all are loved so come along, grab a drink and take it in. There’s no charge for this baby and no reserved spots. Doors open at 6pm and the jam spreads from 7pm.

Fri 29th: We have a wonderful, chilled out evening of live jazz in store for you this Friday as we welcome back to our stage local jazz and blues legends Jude Murphy and Dan Stanley! Jude will speak to your soul with her phenomenal vocals and double bass work while Dan will dazzle you with his gorgeous guitar lines. A real treat for any fans of top musical talent. Sat 30th: This Saturday evening our eager audiences shall be treated to some authentic blues, rockabilly, r’n’r and 50’s country as The Rusty Bullets join us for a live performance. This local blues duo consists of Dominic Malia on guitar and vocals and Peter Turner on bass, these two are extremely well versed in proper roots blues. This gig will be completely free to enjoy and we’ll get the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music kicking off at 8pm
Sat 30th: (Venue) It’s time to get your dancing shoes ready as Club 30-80 return to our venue. A DJ led disco clubnight designed specifically for those who love to go out dancing on a Saturday night but aren’t into the youth oriented club scene. With your DJ happy to take any requests you really can dance to what you want to hear. Tickets will cost just £7+bf and will be available soon. Doors on the night open at 7pm
