JANUARY LISTINGS

Fri 3rd: Kicking off the live entertainment in 2025 here at Prohibition is acoustic blues guitarist John Gregory. Having toured throughout the British isles and gigged in America, John provides a well practiced performance of finger picking, acoustic blues guitar with a particular lean towards the 1920s – so perfect for our bar. You can catch John’s performance for free, just come on in and grab a space, and we’ll have our Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the day open at 6pm with the live music kicking off at 8pm.


Sat 4th:
Performing here at Prohibition once again, phenomenal jazz singer and musician Rivkala. After a hugely successful 2024 for Riv, complete with hit singles and music video launches, we’re thrilled to welcome her back to the stage to treat our guests to a top shelf night of smooth jazz. With a voice compared to Amy Winehouse and a captivating style all of her own, Riv will be performing her own material mixed with some popular hits, supported by two of the finest local jazz musicians on offer; Paul Grainger on bass and Alan Law on keys. This gig will be completely free to enjoy and we’ll get the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors at 6pm, live music from 8pm.


Sun 5th:
This Sunday evening we’ve got lined up for you all Blues, Jazz and Americana trio Salty Dog. With a strong background in all three genres of music, specialising in the classics paying a particular respectful nod to the originators of the music. Consisting of Terry Docherty on guitar and vocals, Herbie Hudson on chromatic harmonica and vocals and John Robinson on acoustic bass. This gig will be free to enter and enjoy and we’ll have the famous Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music from 7pm.

Like the music itself, blues dancing is all about expression and takin’ it easy. All experience levels welcome and the class is drop in, drop out, so don’t ever worry if you’ve not been to one before, you will be well looked after. The class will begin at 7:30pm and run for approximately an hour. If it’s your first session then its free to take part and then thereafter it’s £7.50 per class (£5 for students/concessions)


Thu 9th:
Live this evening at Prohibition Cabaret Bar our resident jazz pianist Merlin Roxby will be taking his place at the keys and treating our guests to a jazzy, saloon style performance. Playing vintage piano versions of well known songs, Merlin will provide the perfect backdrop to anyone enjoying a drink in our establishment this evening. This live entertainment is completely free to enjoy and we’ll have the jar on the bar out for any cash donations, all of which go straight to Merlin. Doors open at 6pm, live performance from 8pm.

Thu 9th: (Venue) This Thursday evening we’re delighted to host the latest edition of Phantoms, a showcase of local authors and storytellers as they present their latest works. Featuring Phantoms regulars like Gail-Nina Anderson and Sean O’Brien and special guest reader Julia Green, this will be an event to sit back and take in the writings of some of the region’s finest. Tickets for this event are just £7+bf and can be purchased here. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the readings starting at 7pm.


Fri 10th:
We’ve got a great deal of Prohibition style fun and entertainment in store for you this Friday night as we excitedly present Jenni Winter’s Sing Along Pian-Oke! Hosted by The Queen of Pink Lane Ms Bunty Del Mar, cabaret pianist Jenni Winter returns to the piano to tinkle the ivories while you, the people, will take to the stage and sing. In this monthly event, you’re invited to take your pick from our selection of songs (and even suggest a few for the next edition) grab a glass of Dutch courage and have fun on the Sapphire Stage with the mic in hand.  Entry is free and we’ll have our Jar on the Bar out for tips for our fantastic pianist. Doors open at 6pm with the fun kicking off at 8pm.


Sat 11th:
Presenting, this Friday evening, all-women cabaret trio Under the Wellie. A group that promises chansons and smoky jazz numbers fronted by their passionate and gifted singer, Magda! Under the Wellie will provide the perfect backdrop to your Friday evening, creating an intimate atmosphere for audiences. This gig will be completely free to enter and enjoy and we’ll get our Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 6pm with the live music from 8pm.


Sun 12th:
Presenting this Sunday evening for the first time here at Prohibition, locally based blues guitarist Dave Bottomley. Having performed regularly for Durham’s Bishop FM and live across the country for many years, we’re delighted to welcome the well practiced music of Dave to our stage. Playing the classic blues of artists like Robert Johnson, Blind Blake and Roy Bookbinder, Dave’s performances are always authentic and powerful. This gig will be completely free to enjoy and you can pay cash donations into our Jar on the Bar, all going straight to the artist. Doors open at 6pm with the live music starting at 7pm

Come on down this Thursday evening for some hot Latin salsa music as Pete Tanton and The Cuban Heels take to the stage. Consisting of local jazz music legends Pete Tanton, Paul Grainger, Alan Law, Mark Robertson and Ben Phillips, The Cuban Heels will treat audiences to some Latin vibes and maybe a bit of dancing. This gig will be completely free for you all to enter and enjoy and we’ll have the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music kicking off at 8pm

Thu 16th: (Venue) This Thursday evening we’re delighted to welcome to our venue for the first time independent poetry collective Blueprint Poetry Press. Brought together by local writers and poets Jo Colley and Julie Hogg, Blueprint Poetry is all about promoting poet’s works with pamphlet launches and speaking events and they’re bringing their latest showcase here. Audience members on the night will be treated to the works of W. N. Herbert and Fran Lock both of whom will be reading from their latest pamphlets. Entry will be completely free and there’ll be a jar out for donations, plus there’ll be opportunities to purchase the showcased works. Doors will open at 6pm with the event running from 7pm.


Fri 17th:
Join us this Friday night for some retro vaudeville jazz with some funky arrangements and associated chaos with local outfit Redwell. Made up of a bevvy of local jazz talent that includes Rich Herdman (guitar), Ray Johnson (Trumpet) and Jude Murphy (Double Bass and vocals). Expect some top quality jazz from top quality performers. This will be a free gig and we’ll have the famous Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music from 8pm

Fri 17th: (Venue) This Friday we’re delighted to bring you our monthly blues dance class and social with Hoodoo Blues. This is an open to all experience levels blues dancing class with a highly accomplished teacher. As with blues dancing itself the class is all about taking it easy, enjoying and expressing yourself and friendly socialising. After the class has finished the evening will transition smoothly into a blues dancing social event to put into practice what you’ve learnt. Doors open at 7pm with the class running from 7:30 to 8:30 and then the night continues until 12 midnight. Entry is £10 on the door for the class and the social or £5 for just the social.


Sat 18th:
This Saturday night we’ve got some clean and classic Jazzy Blues in store for you all as we present local trio The Delta Prophets. The Prophets play some of the classics with a swing feel and a bit of their own penned material. With Paul Allan on rhythm guitar and vocals, Den Fisher on lead guitar and Antonio Moneva on harmonica. This gig will be free to enter and enjoy and we’ll get the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 6pm with the live music starting at 8pm


Sun 19th:
Big news this Sunday evening as we welcome back to our bar one of our all time favourites, Tenement Jazz Band. Hailing from Edinburgh, this outstanding group perform with a huge sense of joy and swing and never fail to get delighted audiences out of their seats, dancing along. This will be a busy gig so get on down nice and early for a good spot. There’ll be no charge but we will have a jar out for cash donations, all of which going straight to the travelling musicians. Doors open at 6pm with the live music from 7pm.

Come on down this Thursday for a bit of cultured jazz with a slight Latin twist, as we’ll be welcoming to our stage The Pedal Point Trio. Having played here together by accident in November, this trio of local music legends consists of Alan Law on keys, Paul Grainger on double bass and Mark Robertson on drums, you’re in good hands with this outfit. The gig will be free to enter and enjoy and we’ll have the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 6pm with the live music kicking off at 8pm.


Fri 24th:
This Friday night we’ve got a great bit of up tempo, lively world music in store for you all as we welcome back to the stage Storytellers Streetband. Having performed here in August we’re delighted to have them back with their background in festival and street performances, this multi-instrumental outfit provide the perfect backdrop to kick off the weekend in. Expect to hear sax, trumpet, trombone, sousaphone, drums and more – it’ll be great fun. This gig will be completely free to enter and enjoy and we’ll have the famous Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 6pm with the live music starting at 8pm


Sat 25th:
Live this Saturday night we’ve got some proper old school entertainment from a hot new double act Jack and Jay’s Vintage Songbook. Long time performer here at Prohibition Jack Logan is teaming up with Jay to bring you two singers for the price of one. Singing the hits of the 40s, 50s and 60s, expect some Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Sammy Davis, Dean Martin and all the others. Jack and Jay will charm you with their on stage chemistry and audience engagement. This gig will be completely free to enter and enjoy and we’ll have our Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 6pm with the performance starting at 8pm


Sun 26th:
Are ya’ ready for this! This Sunday come on down for the latest edition of The Jazz Jam Sandwich! Hosted by Rivkala, Mollie Nature and Liam Oliver, the jam sandwich will hit your ears and your souls on the last Sunday of every month here at Prohibition. It’s all about the freedom music brings us, whether you’re playing it or embracing it. Musicians are welcome, audience members are encouraged and all are loved so come along, grab a drink and take it in. There’s no charge for this baby and no reserved spots. Doors open at 6pm and the jam spreads from 7pm.

Thu 30th:
Live this Thursday evening we’ve got a debut performance in the form of folk duo Mills and Farrell. Hailing from Canada having recently moved to the North East, the duo are looking to get their music out there in the region. They’ve previously toured the UK and have performed as part of the “Crossing the Tyne Festival” and at the Edinburgh Fringe in years gone by so we’re delighted to host them here at Prohibition. This gig will be free to enter and enjoy and we’ll have the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 6pm with the live music from 8pm


Fri 31st:
Performing live this Friday night we’ve got award winning singer/songwriter Steve Pledger. Steve took to our stage for the first time in September in a truly successful gig so we’re thrilled to have him back. Cast in the mold of a classic troubadour, Steve has been described as “a master of his craft”, fusing folk, roots and authentic acoustic music. Steve will treat us to his own works in a gig that will be completely free to enter and enjoy and there’ll be a Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 6pm with the live performance from 8pm

Fri 31st: (Venue) Rescheduled from 2024 We’re thrilled to be hosting outstanding, authentic blues duo Nothing in Rambling. Comprising Sister Suzie with her powerful, soulful vocals and Andy Twyman, blues guitar expert, Nothing in Rambling are guided by a love of early blues music so expect to hear the influences of Mississippi and Louisiana. The duo have toured all around the country and even released their debut album at the start of October last year, so we’re so excited to have them come here for an exclusive performance. This gig is a rescheduled performance from September due to illness, so it’s been a long time coming! Tickets cost just £10+bf and can be purchased here (tickets from September’s show will be redeemed). Doors open on the night at 6pm with the show from 7pm

FEBRUARY LISTINGS

Sat 1st: Come on down this Saturday night for some authentic roots music from The Rockin’ Turner Brothers. Brothers Stuart and Peter Turner perform early country, Western swing and a bit of 50s rockabilly, taking their influences from guitar pickers like  like Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, Jimmy Bryant, Grady Martin and Scotty Moore. Performing on upright double bass and semi acoustic electric guitar, these two always put on a show that’s not to be missed. Enjoy the gig free of charge, just come along and grab a space, and if you like what you hear (you will) you can show your appreciation by dropping some cash in the Jar on the Bar. Doors open at 6pm, live music from 8pm.

This Thursday evening we’re delighted to welcome back to our stage local jazz duo Mostly Moonlight. With Helen Barber on vocals and Alex Moon on keys, this smooth, dreamy jazz duo will be bringing us a fantastic evening of live music in the style of Ella Fitzgerald and her amazing contemporaries. This gig will be completely free and we’ll get our Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. The live music will kick off at 8pm.

Thu 6th: (Venue) Tonight at Prohibition Cabaret Bar! Our upstairs venue is playing host to the monthly networking event Together I’m Possible. Each month the team at Together arrange for two guest speakers to come along and share their stories, past experiences and unique outlooks on life allowing audience members to see things from a new perspective and learn something – be it a new positive attitude, an answer to something specific they’ve been looking for or simply how to be a better human. Tickets are sold on a “pay as you feel” donation basis, suggested donation £5, and can be found following their Facebook page, linked above. The doors to the bar open at 6pm and upstairs is open from 6.30pm. The first speaker is on from 7pm.

Live this Friday evening we’ve got a throwback to the old glory days of the Jazz Café as we welcome to our stage a foursome of jazz musicians who have been performing here since the Crombie years; The John Rowland Quartet. With John Rowland on tenor sax, Paul Grainger on double bass, Alan Law on keys and an as yet unnamed drummer on drums, this night’s gig is guaranteed to be top shelf. Entry for the show is free and we’ll have the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music from 8pm

Live Rock and Roll and Swing music with phenomenal local guitarist Anth Purdy. An old friend of Prohibition Cabaret Bar, Anth always provides a top shelf performance of finger picking guitar music in the genres of Swing, Western Swing, Gypsy Jazz and Hawaiian/50s Surf Music, Rock and Roll and Rockin’ 50s Instrumentals. Anth’s roots lie in the golden era of the American music scene, and audiences are treated not just to the performance, but to musical history as well. Entry will be completely free with a Jar on the Bar for donations. Doors open at 6pm, sets from 8pm

Serving up some jazz standards and original works on guitar, this talented musician will provide the perfect backdrop to your Sunday night drinking here at Prohibition. Having spent some time busking around the North East and performing in various venues around South Shields, the duo are taking their music to the city centre including a gig in our bar. Performing hits from the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Amy Winehouse, White Stripes, Chris Isaac and more the duo will provide a fantastic, chilled out evening of soulful live music. This gig will be completely free to enjoy and we’ll have a Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music starting at 8pm

This Saturday we’re thrilled to host an evening of live jazz with North East based group, The Milne Glendinning Band. This long established group regularly treat our audiences to an evening of smooth jazz fused with alternative folk and soul. A powerful trio of talented musicians, Debra Milne on vocals, Steve Glendinning on guitar and Michael Clark on bass will be providing original contemporary music with smart lyrics & jazz infused melodic grooves. Entry will be completely free with a Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music starting at 8pm

Roll up, roll up! It’s the return of our monthly Burlesque show! Kicking off the 2025 calendar of dazzling performances by the award winning and simply magnificent Trixie Blue and her troupe of talented dancers and entertainers. Presenting Vaudeville Vault; starring The Sapphire Whiskers along with some special guest performers. With it being February, the month of St Valentine, there may well be a romantic, perhaps even erotic edge to the show, so you know it’ll be a good one. Tickets are available for just £3+bf and can be purchased here. Doors on the night open at 7pm with the show starting at 8pm. Please Note for the duration of the show access is permitted to those with tickets only – we apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Fri 21st: (Venue) Hoodoo Blues presents their monthly open-to-all-experience-levels blues dance class and social. Hosted by some highly experienced dancing tutors, the Hoodoo Blues dance class aims to open up the world of blues dancing to any and all while sticking to the core themes of blues dancing – laid back, enjoyable, social and emotive. The class itself runs from 7:30pm – 8:30pm and is £10 to be a part of. From the end of the class at half past 8 the evening transitions smoothly into a dance social to put what you’ve learned into practice and to enjoy some Friday night blues music and dancing in a comfortable space. If you’re just in for the dancing social and not the class then it’s only £5 to enter. Runs until midnight.


Sat 22nd:
This Saturday evening we’ve got some fantastic live solo acoustic fingerpicking ragtime bottleneck and blues guitar with local guitarist Michael Woods. A regular performer here at Prohibition, always treating our guests to a fantastic night of live music, Michael will be back doing his thing, playing some classic tunes on guitar and vocals and generally entertaining the room. This gig will be completely free to enjoy and there’ll be a Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 6pm with the live music starting at 8pm.

Wed 26th: (Venue) It’s our weekly blues dance class, hosted by the fantastic Hoodoo Blues. Come alone or with a partner and learn from expert tutor Melissa Davy all about the art of blues dancing. Like the music itself, blues dancing is all about expression and takin’ it easy. All experience levels welcome and the class is drop in, drop out, so don’t ever worry if you’ve not been to one before, you will be well looked after. The class will begin at 7:30pm and run for approximately an hour. If it’s your first session then its free to take part and then thereafter it’s £7.50 per class (£5 for students/concessions)


Fri 28th:
Join us this Friday night for some retro vaudeville jazz with some funky arrangements and associated chaos with local outfit Redwell. Made up of a bevvy of local jazz talent that includes Rich Herdman (guitar), Ray Johnson (Trumpet) and Jude Murphy (Double Bass and vocals). Expect some top quality jazz from top quality performers. This will be a free gig and we’ll have the famous Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music from 8pm
