DECEMBER LISTINGS

Sun 1st: 2pm-5pm Come one, come all to a proper old school afternoon of sophistication and entertainment as vintage singer and dancer Hildy Harland presents this year’s festive edition of The Temperance Tea Party. Enjoy a delicious handmade afternoon tea while you sit back and take in a delightful show full of singing, dancing and comedy. Tickets start at just £8 for entry only, £22 for the show and the full afternoon tea and £25 for the show, the afternoon tea plus a glass of prosecco on arrival – booking fee applies to all of those ticket options and they can all be purchased here. Vegan and gluten free options are available for the food. Doors on the day will open at 2pm with the show starting at 2:30pm.

Sun 1st: (Venue) Presenting a live exclusive musical event as singer, songwriter and rap musician Al Jacobi comes to our bar as part of his 2024 The Pain in Joy tour. Al Jacobi is the broken mirror in which we see our true selves. With his electronic singer/songwriter rap he gives a voice to the unspoken truths we collectively ignore. Al Jacobi is the only rapper in the world performing with the MiMU gloves – a wireless, gestural MIDI controller used to control various parameters of the music while performing. Al Jacobi will be supported on the night by Scandinavian rising pop sensation Amea. Known for blending emotional depth with irresistible pop hooks, Amea’s music is as captivating as it is heartfelt. Tickets for this event are on a “pay as you feel” donation basis and can be pre purchased online here or on the night. Doors open at 7pm, show starts at 7:30pm

It’s our Weekly Pub Quiz! Join our quizmaster, Danny ‘Eyeballs’ for four rounds of brain exercise. Come top of the pile and win actual cash money! Fall just short and come in second to win a boozy treat, or failing all that, come rock bottom to earn delicious biscuits for the whole team. £1 entry per person, teams of up to 6 people, quiz starts at 8:30pm PLUS This week’s quiz is a special one – with it being the first quiz of December it’s tradition to come dressed in our best (or worst) Christmas jumpers! There will be prizes for the best jumper!


Thu 5th:
We’re delighted to welcome back to our stage this Thursday evening, London based singer Sophie Mairi. Sophie’s phenomenal, heart-warming vocals cover the golden era of jazz and swing and she’s been performing at weddings and parties as well as exclusive gigs, like her debut show here in May. This gig will be completely free to enter and enjoy and we’ll have the Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music from 8pm


Fri 6th:
We’ve got a great deal of Prohibition style fun and entertainment in store for you this Friday night as we excitedly play host to Jenni Winter’s Sing Along Pian-Oke! Cabaret pianist Jenni Winter returns to the piano to tinkle the ivories while you, the people, will take to the stage and sing AND in a very exciting development this December’s Pian-Oke will be hosted by a special guest – someone with the perfect amount of flair, fabulousness and stage presence that the occasion demands. I won’t give too much away, but let’s just say the old Queen of Pink Lane is making a storming return. In this monthly event, you’re invited to take your pick from our selection of songs (and even suggest a few for the next edition) grab a glass of Dutch courage and have fun on the Sapphire Stage with the mic in hand.  Entry is free and we’ll have our Jar on the Bar out for tips for our fantastic pianist. Doors open at 6pm with the fun kicking off at 8pm. P.S. it’s December so expect lots of Christmas hits.


Sat 7th:
This Saturday night we’re delighted to welcome back for their first gig with us in a while, North East based Country/Americana band The Peabodys. Their influences take their music into a whole range of genres, including a bit of Bluegrass, Western Swing and even a bit of the Blues. This outstanding big band, performing with anywhere between two and seven members, bring to the stage guitars, violins, flutes, double bass, vocals and much more, so you know it’ll be a lively, fun filled show. The gig will be completely free to enjoy and we’ll get the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music from 8pm


Sun 8th: Join us this Sunday evening for some retro vaudeville jazz with some funky arrangements and associated chaos with local outfit Redwell. Made up of a bevvy of local jazz talent that includes Rich Herdman (guitar), Ray Johnson (Trumpet) and Jude Murphy (Double Bass and vocals). Expect some top quality jazz from top quality performers. This will be a free gig and we’ll have the famous Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music from 7pm

Sun 8th: (Venue) Presenting Think New Acoustic, a showcase of North East acoustic music talent. Headed by local guitarist and singer Daniel Iverson this exclusive evening of live music will feature a handful of phenomenal musicians. Money made from tickets will go entirely towards future events and to promote independent musicians. Performers on the night include indie singer/songwriter Chris Kelly, freewheeling, blues and soul musician Tom Charnley, soulful, story-telling musician Daniel Iverson and indie artist Alf Hill. Tickets are £5 advance and can be purchased here or £6 on the door. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the first performance from 6:30pm.


Wed 11th: 4:30pm – 6pm
Introducing a new musical venture here at Prohibition. Come and join Cath Stephens and the Prohibition team for a cosy session of music-making. This collaborative group will focus largely on vocal improvisation as a method for composition. The intention is to create a supportive space for improvisers, songwriters, musicians and poets to share their work, create new music together and to build collaborative partnerships and community. There will be a run of sessions to gauge interest and gather feedback. Sessions will run initially on a donation basis to help cover venue costs. Though there is a focus on vocal improvisation, please do feel free to bring your instruments. Refreshments will be available to buy in the venue, which is fully accessible.

Thu 12th:
 This Thursday evening we’ve got some proper authentic rockabilly, roots and blues music from fantastic guitarist and vocalist Stuart Turner. Stuart takes inspiration from such artists as Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, Joni Mitchell, George Benson and many others and is a regular performer here at Prohibition, always treating our guests to a foot tapping, knee slapping good time. This gig will be completely free and we’ll have the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors will open at 6pm with the live music from 8pm

Thu 12th: (Venue) We’re absolutely thrilled to host a Newcastle based improv comedy group Spontaneous Wrecks for this year’s edition of their annual Christmas show Spontaneous Wrecksmas! Join us for a festive extravaganza in the form of a show made up on the spot based on your suggestions with our favourite games and a brand new, one time only version of A Christmas Carol! It’s guaranteed to be a night of laughs and all round seasonal merriment. Tickets for the show cost just £8 and can be purchased here. Doors on the night open at 7pm with the show from 7:30pm


Fri 13th: Join us this Friday evening for some live jazz in the form of much loved classics in fresh new arrangements as we welcome to our stage Ransom Van. Headed by local jazz guitar maestro Rich Herdman and accompanied by double bass legend Jude Murphy, the soulful, heartfelt vocals of Shayo and sweet, melodic harmonica playing from Ray Burns. This will be a top shelf, smooth performance and the perfect way to chill out with a drink on a Sunday night. Entry to the gig is completely free and we’ll have a Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 6pm with the live music from 8pm


Sat 14th:
This Saturday night we’re thrilled to host an eccentric jazz, funk and soul collaboration between some of the region’s best jazz talents, tentatively named Papa G’s Troves. Featuring Papa G and some of the region’s best jazz musicians performing on saxophone, trumpet, double bass, keys, drums and of course some soulful vocals. Expect some authentic jazz classics with a gospelly twinge. This gig will be completely free to enjoy and we’ll have the Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music from 8pm

Playing the classics and standards, Leeway is made up of Jude Murphy on double bass and vocals, Alan Law on keys and Tim Johnston on drums. It’ll be a chilled out, top shelf affair, the perfect way to spend a Sunday evening. Entry to the gig will be completely free and we’ll have the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Thu 19th: We have a wonderful, chilled out evening of live jazz in store for you this Thursday as we welcome back to our stage local jazz and blues legends Jude Murphy and Dan Stanley! Jude will speak to your soul with her phenomenal vocals and double bass work while Dan will dazzle you with his gorgeous guitar lines. A real treat for any fans of top musical talent. Entry will be free with a Jar on the Bar for any gratefully received donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music kicking off at 8pm

Thu 19th: (Venue) Tonight at Prohibition Cabaret Bar! Our upstairs venue is playing host to the monthly networking event Together I’m Possible. Each month the team at Together arrange for two guest speakers to come along and share their stories, past experiences and unique outlooks on life allowing audience members to see things from a new perspective and learn something – be it a new positive attitude, an answer to something specific they’ve been looking for or simply how to be a better human. Tickets are sold on a “pay as you feel” donation basis, suggested donation £5, and can be found following their Facebook page, linked above. The doors to the bar open at 6pm and upstairs is open from 6.30pm. The first speaker is on from 7pm.


Fri 20th:
Roll up, roll up! It’s time for our monthly Burlesque night!! Produced and hosted by award winning local sensation Trixie Blue, this Friday night audiences will be treated to a scintillating, winter warming evening of raunchy fun as Trixie and her Sapphire Whiskers take to the stage and deliver some festive performances that are guaranteed to leave even Santa himself hot under the collar. This month it’s the turn of The Vaudeville Vault, a showcase of the phenomenal talents of Trixie’s own troupe as well as some special guests. Tickets for this show will cost just £3+bf and will go on sale at exactly 10:30am on Saturday 16th November – links to ticket sales site can be found through the House of Trixie Blue Facebook page. Doors on the night open at 7pm with the show starting at 8pm. Please Note for the duration of the show entry to the public bar will be permitted only to those with tickets.

Fri 20th: (Venue) Hoodoo Blues presents their monthly open-to-all-experience-levels blues dance class and social. Hosted by some highly experienced dancing tutors, the Hoodoo Blues dance class aims to open up the world of blues dancing to any and all while sticking to the core themes of blues dancing – laid back, enjoyable, social and emotive. The class itself runs from 7:30pm – 8:30pm and is £10 to be a part of. From the end of the class at half past 8 the evening transitions smoothly into a dance social to put what you’ve learned into practice and to enjoy some Friday night blues music and dancing in a comfortable space. If you’re just in for the dancing social and not the class then it’s only £5 to enter. Runs until midnight.


Sat 21st:
You’re invited to Carmen’s Christmas Party! Local, classically trained singer Carmen Silk will grace our stage for her annual Christmas classics show, treating audiences to the very best of festive jazz, swing and ballads. Celebrate the season and warm up for the big day with Carmen here at Prohibition. This will be a completely free to enter and enjoy show and we’ll have the famous Jar on the Bar out for your generous, seasonal cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live performance from 8pm


Sun 22nd:
This Sunday evening we’re delighted to present a fantastic collaboration between some local musical talents; guitarist Lawrence Harrison, double bassist Paul Grainger and drummer Mark Robertson all long time performers of smooth jazz here within these walls so a top quality gig is guaranteed. This gig will be completely free to enter and enjoy and we’ll have our Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music from 7pm


Wed 25th:
It’s quiz night here at Prohibition, so join quizmaster Danny ‘Eye- ONLY JOKING!!! It’s Christmas Day and we shall be closed!! Enjoy your seasonal celebration and rest, treasured friends, and we’ll see you back out on Friday 27th when we reopen.


Fri 27th:
This Friday evening we’ve got some fantastic live solo acoustic fingerpicking ragtime bottleneck and blues guitar with local guitarist Michael Woods. A regular performer here at Prohibition, always treating our guests to a fantastic night of live music, Michael will be back doing his thing, playing some classic tunes on guitar and vocals and generally entertaining the room. This gig will be completely free to enjoy and there’ll be a Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 6pm with the live music starting at 8pm.

Sat 28th: We’ve got a bit of live jazz for you on this, the last gig night of 2024. We’ll be joined by the ever amazing Jude Murphy on double bass and vocals and dual local guitarists Rich Herdman and Giles Strong treating us to a soulful evening of top shelf jazz music. This gig will be completely free to enjoy (just what you need after Christmas) and we’ll have the Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music kicking of at 8pm


Tue 31st:
ATTENTION ladies, gentlemen and everything in between! This year at Prohibition Cabaret Bar our end of year festivities are taking the form of a Big Fat Quiz of the Year!! Hosted by our very own quizmaster, Danny “Eyeballs” Gaffney, this New Year spectacular will feature 8 rounds of questions that will cover the many goings on across 2024 in the form of straight up trivia, picture rounds, dramatic readings and much more! PLUS there’ll be 3 silly bonus challenges for extra points! And you’re going to want those points as there will be big prizes on offer; without giving too much away there will be fabulous food and drink prizes, big cash prizes and other perhaps less serious prizes too – and what’s more EVERY team will win something, no empty hands going into 2025! All this, plus every table gets a bottle of bubbly so we can all give a big cheer when the clock strikes midnight! It’s going to be a fantastic way to write off the delightful year we’ve all just had. We’re looking for 10 teams to take part, with a maximum of 4 people per team. To enter it costs £45 for the table (regardless of how many people are in the team) with all the entry money going towards the prizes – the bottle of fizz is included in the entry fee. On the night the doors will open at 8pm with the quiz starting at 8:30pm.
