SEPTEMBER LISTINGS

Sun 1st: 2pm-6pm Each month on the first Sunday of the month Prohibition Cabaret Bar brings you The Classic Cinema Club. Come on down and enjoy one of the big hits of the silver screen for free in our sophisticated screening room (the main bar with a projector setup). Showing this month: The Killers. Based on an Ernest Hemingway short story this 1946 classic stars Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardner. Entry is free and we’ll have cinema snacks on sale. Doors open at 2pm with the film showing from 3pm.

Sun 1st: Live this Sunday night, we’ve got some chilled jazz for you all performed by London based guitarist Tom Remon. Serving up some jazz standards and original works on guitar, this talented musician will provide the perfect backdrop to your Sunday night drinking here at Prohibition. This gig will be completely free to enjoy and we’ll get our Jar on the Bar out for your generous cash donations. Doors open at 6pm, live music at 7pm.

It’s our Weekly Pub Quiz! Join our quizmaster, Danny ‘Eyeballs’ for four rounds of brain exercise. Come top of the pile and win actual cash money! Fall just short and come in second to win a boozy treat, or failing all that, come rock bottom to earn delicious biscuits for the whole team. £1 entry per person, teams of up to 6 people, quiz starts at 8:30pm

Wed 4th: (Venue) It’s our weekly blues dance class, hosted by the fantastic Hoodoo Blues. Come alone or with a partner and learn from expert tutor Melissa Davy all about the art of blues dancing. Like the music itself, blues dancing is all about expression and takin’ it easy. All experience levels welcome and the class is drop in, drop out, so don’t ever worry if you’ve not been to one before, you will be well looked after. The class will begin at 7:30pm and run for approximately an hour. If it’s your first session then its free to take part and then thereafter it’s £7.50 per class (£5 for students/concessions)


Thu 5th:
Live this evening at Prohibition Cabaret Bar our resident jazz pianist Merlin Roxby will be taking his place at the keys and treating our guests to a jazzy, saloon style performance. Playing vintage piano versions of well known songs, Merlin will provide the perfect backdrop to anyone enjoying a drink in our establishment this evening. This live entertainment is completely free to enjoy and we’ll have the jar on the bar out for any cash donations, all of which go straight to Merlin. Doors open at 6pm, live performance from 8pm.


Fri 6th:
This Friday evening we’ve got some fantastic live solo acoustic fingerpicking ragtime bottleneck and blues guitar with local guitarist Michael Woods. A regular performer here at Prohibition, always treating our guests to a fantastic night of live music, Michael will be back doing his thing, playing some classic tunes on guitar and vocals and generally entertaining the room. This gig will be completely free to enjoy and there’ll be a Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 6pm with the live music starting at 8pm.


Sat 7th:
Live this Saturday night we’re absolutely delighted to introduce to the Prohibition stage County Durham based artist Steve Pledger. A highly acclaimed solo acoustic folk singer/songwriter/guitarist, Steve has performed all across the country and released multiple award winning studio albums. Without doubt we’re very excited that Steve is bring his work to our bar – it’ll definitely not be one to miss. Entry to the gig is completely free and we’ll have the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations for the artist. Doors open at 6pm with the live music from 8pm

Sat 7th: (Venue) Get yerself dressed right proper and ready to dance; Grindhouse Events presents Rudeness Rockabilly clubnight! An evening of rockabilly, ska, punk, swing, rock ‘n’ roll and psychobilly from the 50s to the present day! Come on down and forget the troubles of the week with some proper music and good booze. Entry is £5 on the door. 8pm – midnight!


Sun 8th:
 We’ve got some live jazz standards, popular songs and showtunes from the Great American Songbook brought to us by local musicians Eva Fox & The Jazz Guys. Eva performs regularly with jazz legends Alan Law, Paul Grainger and Tim Johnston, so we’re bound to be treated to a top quality performance. This gig will be completely free to enjoy and we’ll have the Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 6pm, live music from 7pm

Brace yourself for some Latin vibes as we welcome to the stage The Cuban Heels. Pete Tanton (vocals, trumpet, percussion), Paul Grainger (double bass), Mark Robertson (drums) and Ben Phillips (keys) will descend upon Prohibition to bring us a hot evening of Cuban and Latin tunes, so come on down, grab a drink and maybe even get in on a bit of dancing too. This gig will be completely free to enjoy with a Jar on the Bar for cash donations. Doors at 6pm, live music from 8pm.


Fri 13th:
We’ve got a great deal of Prohibition style fun and entertainment in store for you this Friday night as we excitedly play host to Jenni Winter’s Sing Along Pian-Oke! Cabaret pianist Jenni Winter returns to the piano to tinkle the ivories while you, the people, will take to the stage and sing. In this monthly event, you’re invited to take your pick from our selection of songs (and even suggest a few for the next edition) grab a glass of Dutch courage and have fun on the Sapphire Stage with the mic in hand.  Entry is free and we’ll have our Jar on the Bar out for tips for our fantastic pianist. Doors open at 6pm with the fun kicking off at 8pm.


Sat 14th: This Friday night we are delighted to be joined by classically trained singer Carmen Silk, a phenomenal local vocalist who will be treating us to an evening of Classics With Carmen. Delivering an intimate mix of jazz, swing, blues and showtunes, Carmen will take inspiration from artists such as Liza Minelli, Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee and much more. This show is completely free to enjoy and we’ll have the old Jar on the Bar out for your generous cash donations. Live music from 8pm.

Sat 14th: (Venue) Presenting: A Night of Ghosts! An interactive night of spooky entertainment. Created by Des O’Gorman [The Ghostbusters of Scotland, Comic Con Host] and Ash Pryce [Co-founder Edinburgh Horror Festival]. Featuring Ash Pryce’s – Ghosts: Step into the psychic’s parlour for an experience with the supernatural, the paranormal, and things that go BUMP in the night as you take part in a series of mind-twisting demonstrations drawing on psychic superpowers, spirit communication, and Victorian Séance. A unique, unsettling, and immersive magic show from the Master of the Magical Macabre. Followed up by ​Des O’Gorman’s – Still Ready to Believe You. This show is a love letter to nostalgia, geeks, and childhood – whether you’ve seen the movies or not. Des presents the latest version of his one-man Ghostbusters tribute show. Fun, funny, and moving, he talks about everything Ghostbusters and how growing up a GB fan has its ups and downs. Covering the movies, comics, cartoons, toys, and the newest instalment, Ghostbusters Frozen Empire. For anyone who knows who to call! Wow! All this in one night for just one ticket. Prices range from £14 to £20 per ticket (choose whichever price you feel) and can be purchased here. Doors on the night open at 7pm with the show from 8pm


Sun 15th:
Live this Sunday evening we’re thrilled to present a hot new jazz trio… it’s so fresh they’re yet to give it a name! Comprising of a trinity of local musical legends, Jude Murphy on double bass and vocals, Steve Chambers on the organ and Sid White on drums, this gig will be unrivalled for quality. So come on down and enjoy it for free (as all our gigs are) and round off your weekend in proper style. We’ll also have the Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 6pm with the live music from 7pm

Thu 19th: (Venue) Tonight at Prohibition Cabaret Bar! Our upstairs venue is playing host to the monthly networking event Together I’m Possible. Each month the team at Together arrange for two guest speakers to come along and share their stories, past experiences and unique outlooks on life allowing audience members to see things from a new perspective and learn something – be it a new positive attitude, an answer to something specific they’ve been looking for or simply how to be a better human. Tickets are sold on a “pay as you feel” donation basis, suggested donation £5, and can be found following their Facebook page, linked above. The doors to the bar open at 6pm and upstairs is open from 6.30pm. The first speaker is on from 7pm.


Fri 20th:
Roll up, roll up! It’s Burlesque night here at Prohibition, presented by the award winning Trixie Blue. This month we have in store for you all the more serious, classier show, The Burlesque Revue, where an incredibly talented and glamorous artist from the wonderful world of Burlesque comes along and treats us to a special guest performance – this month we’re delighted to welcome to the Sapphire Stage Lady Wildflower. Tickets are just £3+bf and can be purchased here. Doors on the night open at 7pm with the show starting at 8pm


Sat 21st:
Live this Saturday night we’ve got some top shelf jazz in store for you all as we welcome back to our stage two of the finest musicians of the North East: Jude Murphy and Alan Law. Alan will be setting the tone with his silky smooth and fast flowing piano skills and Jude will add the soul and gravitas on her double bass and with her soothing vocals. This high class gig will be completely free to enter and enjoy and if you’ve got some loose cash with you we’ll have the Jar on the Bar out for your generous donations, all of it going straight to the much deserving artists. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music kicking off at 8pm


Sun 22nd:
Come on down this Sunday evening for some live jazz with local guitarist and musical legend Rich Herdman. Rich will be joined, no doubt, by a talented collection of contemporaries to provide our guests with some top shelf jazz music. Expect the classics in some fresh new arrangements. This gig will be completely free to enter and we’ll have the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors open at 6pm with the live music starting at 7pm.

This Thursday evening we’ve got some smooth jazz standards in store for you all as well renowned jazz and folk trumpeter Neil Yates is teaming up with London based jazz guitarist and good friend of Prohibition Tom Remon and touring the UK, including a stop off here in our humble bar. This is a rare opportunity to see such top jazz talent in an intimate performance. Entry to the gig is completely free and we’ll put the ol’ Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm with the live music from 8pm

Thu 26th: (Venue) We’re thrilled to welcome back to our bar highly renown local poet and writer Sean O’ Brien for an evening of new poetry from Sean himself as well as some special guests. Sean is presenting his new poetry pamphlet, Juniper, and he will be joined by fellow North East poets Pippa Little and Harry Man. This event will be the official Newcastle launch of Sean’s latest work and a copy of Juniper will be given free with each ticket (additional copies can be purchased on the night for an exclusive price of £5). Tickets themselves cost just £5 and can be purchased here. The event on the night starts at 7pm

Fri 27th: 11pm – 2am Exciting times, folks, it’s the second ever Newcastle Burlesque Festival 2024! Created, produced, hosted and performed by the incredible Trixie Blue and her wonderful team, all the stops and so much work has been put into the festival, bringing you FIVE NIGHTS of Burlesque performances. We’re especially thrilled to be hosting two of the most exclusive shows of the festival, including this Friday night’s offering: The X-Rated Late Night Show! Featuring thought provoking, sensual and boundary-pushing acts, this will not be for the fainthearted. Fri 27th: (Venue) In our upper venue this evening we’re thrilled to host outstanding, authentic blues duo Nothing in Rambling. Comprising of Sister Suzie with her powerful, soulful vocals and Andy Twyman, blues guitar expert, Nothing in Rambling are guided by a love of early blues music so expect to hear the influences of Mississippi and Louisiana. The duo have toured all around the country and will even be releasing their debut album at the start of October, so we’re so excited to have them come here. The duo are also being supported by highly acclaimed local blues musicians Michael Littlefield and Lyndon Anderson. Tickets for this exclusive event cost just £10+bf and can be purchased here. Sat 28th:
Live this Saturday evening we’ve got something special in store – a supergroup made up of a curated selection of members from some of the region’s most exciting jazz and swing bands; Tenement Jazz Band, The Easy Rollers and Magpies of Swing. Expect a wonderful blend of these outstanding local groups treating us to the perfect Saturday night live performance. There’ll be dancing in the aisles, I just know it. Entry for this gig will be completely free and we’ll have a Jar on the Bar out for cash donations. Doors on the night open at 6pm and the live music starts at 7pm, slightly earlier than usual

Sat 28th: 11pm – 2am For the second night running we’re incredibly thrilled to be hosting part of the Newcastle Burlesque Festival 2024! This Saturday night it’s a birthday celebration as THE name in North East Burlesque, Miss Trixie Blue, is turning [REDACTED]! And it’s being celebrated in style as we present The Big Blue Birthday Burleque-e-oke! If it wasn’t clear from the name, this will be a harmonious fusion of the twin arts of Burlesque and Karaoke – the incredibly talented (and willing) dancers will be improvising their performances while the enthusiastic audience members will lend their vocals to a range of tunes. Sun 29th: 2pm-5pm
Come one, come all to a proper old school afternoon of sophistication and entertainment as vintage singer and dancer Hildy Harland presents the latest edition of The Temperance Tea Party. Enjoy a delicious handmade afternoon tea while you sit back and take in a delightful show full of singing, dancing and comedy. Tickets start at just £8 for entry only, £22 for the show and the full afternoon tea and £25 for the show, the afternoon tea plus a glass of prosecco on arrival – booking fee applies to all of those ticket options and they can all be purchased here. Vegan and gluten free options are available for the food. Doors on the day will open at 2pm with the show starting at 2:30pm.

Sun 29th: Are ya’ ready for this! This Sunday come on down for the latest edition of The Jazz Jam Sandwich! Hosted by Rivkala, Mollie Nature and Liam Oliver, the jam sandwich will hit your ears and your souls on the last Sunday of every month here at Prohibition. It’s all about the freedom music brings us, whether you’re playing it or embracing it. Musicians are welcome, audience members are encouraged and all are loved so come along, grab a drink and take it in. There’s no charge for this baby and no reserved spots. Doors open at 6pm and the jam spreads from 7pm.
